Kenny Drew’s piano work is a textbook example of how to support a vocalist, adding instrumental spice without obstructing the singer, on par with Teddy Wilson’s work with Billie Holiday. Sam Jones and Philly Joe Jones function similarly, swinging solidly in support without disturbing the mood of each tune – they are replaced by George Morrow and Dannie Richmond on a few tracks without incident.
The marriage of great performance with a selection of great jazz standards guarantees a tasty listening experience, seasoned with a touch of Chet’s bittersweet wistfulness.
